In September of 1991, Bishop James T. McHugh of the Diocese of Camden, New Jersey granted permission to two Roman Catholic Priests (Msgrs. Carl and Louis Marucci) to utilize quality music as a medium for evangelization throughout the diocese. After considerable and prayerful planning, the Jubilate Deo Chorale & Orchestra was organized. The purpose of the development of the Jubilate Deo Chorale & Orchestra was to utilize music as a vehicle to integrate spirituality and music into the mainstream of society, and to provide such experiences for persons who would otherwise never experience such events.
This medium for evangelization, currently under the direction of Monsignor Louis A. Marucci, Executive Director, has proven to be most successful. In the spring of 2001 the Jubilate Deo Chorale & Orchestra's Board of Governors and members of the orchestra formed a search committee in order to hire a new conductor for the organization. After a thorough interview and audition process, Dr. Ron Matthews has been appointed to assume the responsibilities of Conductor and Music Director of the Jubilate Deo Chorale & Orchestra effective July 1, 2001. Performing several Sacred Oratorios' during the year, the Jubilate Deo Chorale & Orchestra currently draws audiences with 5,000-7,000 attendees during each Christmas/Easter Season. By combining the gifts of music and faith, the Jubilate Deo Chorale & Orchestra fulfills its mission by providing quality musical experiences ranging from ancient Gregorian chant to contemporary inspirational music, which is professional, wholesome and uplifting, currently available on compact disc and cassette. (See order form.)
The Jubilate Deo Chorale & Orchestra is a 75 member non-profit Chorale and a 75 member professional symphonic orchestra. Though located in an area of our nation that offers an abundance of quality musical artistic expression, the Jubilate Deo Chorale & Orchestra remains the only group of its kind in the region to combine faith, voice and instrument to celebrate history's greatest spiritual compositions. This unique characteristic of sharing the spiritual dimension of music is the reason for the groups attractiveness and success.
The volunteer aspect of such a massive program as the Jubilate Deo Chorale & Orchestra should not be misinterpreted. All potential Chorale members are required to audition before being accepted. Additionally, the Orchestra division is comprised of accomplished musicians--many of whom also perform within other major symphonic associations. Together, these men and women provide the Ensemble with some of the highest caliber of musical talent in the region.
